Biography
As a lifelong tennis player, I have been disappointed to discover that the game has changed to the point of exclusion. It's no longer a 'grass roots game'. It's not interesting to watch professional tennis because it doesn't look like the professionals are playing the same game as the average player. I stopped playing tennis altogether. I stopped watching tennis on television.
After lamenting the fact that the tennis I had always played was no longer relevant, I began a quest to find an activity that was similar to tennis, and finally found Pickleball, which has been exploding in popularity, in the Southwest part of the US.
After many attempts, I could not get into that game. The sound of the plastic whiffleball against the hard court and the limited strategy and the level of athleticism on the courts was just not going to work, for me. I needed tennis...
While visiting a local country club with my 22 year old son, who is an outstanding tennis player, I mentioned that a game needed to be invented that would be played on a pickleball court with a very slow ball and lighter racquets, and preferably on grass, to which he stated, "Oh, you mean like touchtennis?"
Soon, we were watching youtube videos and searching the internet, and finally found Touchtennis.com. I ordered the tennis set, with net and balls/racquets, which arrived promptly and soon we hit the pickleball court...
The game has the perfect combination of technique and speed. The court can be covered much more easily, and there is more time to hit the ball. Tennis awareness and technique matters, very much. It's the same work out, or even much better for an intermediate player. Tennis strategy is essential to success in touchtennis, as are technical skills. Playing touchtennis makes one's tennis game much better.
